Regensburg

The day dawned bright and sunny today, but the river hadn't receded enough to allow the boat to get under the railroad bridge nearby.  As a result, we traveled about an hour by bus to Regensburg, and after we left, the ship headed north to meet us part way.  Regensburg is perhaps the best preserved city in Bavaria.  Spared by the Allies in WW2 in favor of bombing the Messerschmidt plant nearby, the town stands today with many of the same structures as were present in the middle ages.  Portions of the Roman wall built in the Second century still exist, and you can imagine the days of knights and crusaders as you site in the central square, with the Cathederal, Bishop's house and other buildings still there nearly as they were in the 1500's.  After we returned to the boat, the Captain informed us that we would continue up river to Regensburg, this time on the boat.  It was a perfect spring afternoon, and the sail through two sets of locks was about as relaxing and picturesque as you can get.
After dinner and the entertainment from a wonderful A Capella group, it was off to bed, and the night transit to Passua for tomorrow's exploration!
