Today we experienced the old world charm of Vienna – a modern city in every sense – surrounding the exquisite charm of the Mozart era and before. From the ancient library, to the Habsburg Palace, to the Catherdral, to the Spanish Riding Academy, to the Vienna Boys choir, the city has a charm that is really unequalled.May 1st is a Holy Day, so the people were not working and the shops were not open, but the festive atmosphere prevailed.Additionally the small communist party in Austria was holding their annual May Day protest and march, so the bus drivers had a pretty ominous task navigating the streets. In the afternoon we went to the exceptional Schonbrunn Palace on the west side of the city.Though it was crowded, the palace is not to be missed to see how the nobility of Central Europe lived in the 18th and 19th century!Don’t miss the carriage museum, which is well worth the few extra Euro’s to visit. On to Budapest with an evening and overnight voyage on the Danube to arrive in the twin cities first thing in the morning!
