Queen Mary Final Installment
I apologize for not sending out more entries on the QM2 Voyage, but the satellite internet really bogged down the last few days!
It was a wonderful trip. Outside of the ship, the on board enrichment programs were wonderful, especially the presentations by my friend Jeff Tall from the Royal Navy on the history of the Royal Navy Submarine Force, and the Astronomer from Jodell Banks Observatory. They added great intellectual stimulation throughout the voyage. The last two days of the cruise, as we sailed by the Atlantic Provinces, the weather turned somewhat sour with more than 40 knots of wind across the deck, but the ship was very smooth and the stabilizers did their thing. There is no question that the ship would be very comfortable in just about any but the heaviest sea states.
The food was excellent overall. The take on Todd English specialty restaurant was the the quality was more dependent on what you ordered. The food in the main dining room and King's Court was excellent.
The on board entertainers for the Lounges were excellent - especially the harpist. The orchestras in both the Show Lounge and Queen's Grill were excellent, and the passenger participation in the nightly ballroom dancing and daily dance lessons was significant. The G32 Disco was well attended and the Caribbean Band from St. Lucia - not a steel band - but a standard four piece band was superb. The guest stars in the show stage were excellent also, but the stage shows were only fair as the dancers were not particularly adept and they were never sinc'ed up that well. The four singers were very good, and they did the best they could with rather weak productions. The Planetarium was good, with most of the shows having come from the American Museum of Natural History. It was hampered somewhat by the fact that one of the projectors was not working leaving a small, tolerable sector with no picture.
Cunard has done a great job with the modern version of the classic transatlantic voyage. The ship is wonderful and is staffed by and extremely friendly and helpful staff! I look forward to sailing with Cunard Again!
