Pilgrimage to Rome, Tuesday Feb 10
After an uneventful and on time flight from Charleston to Atlanta and then Rome, we collected our baggage and met our escort, who has been taking this pilgrimage with Msgr Roth for the past 15 years. Of interest on the Atlanta to Rome flight, was that someone sitting behind me was celebrating their annivesary, and the flight attendants brought then two first class deserts and two glasses of Champagne. Hadn't seen that before, but it was a very nice touch. We boarded our bus an headed into our first stop - the North American College, to take a tour, celebrate Mass, and kill some time while our escort took our baggage and checked us into our rooms. The North American College is the Seminary in Rome for Diocesian students from around the US. Currently the seminary is full with more than 110 students in residence - spending from four to six years in theirs studies. The campus is physically located in Vatican City, with the land having been given to the organization in the 20th century for this purpose. The main building is quite beautiful, not ornate but elegant, with a smaller chapel in one wing and their main chapel off the main building. We celebrated Mass in the smaller chapel. The highlight of the visit was the trip to the sixth floor roof, which has the best view of all of Rome in the City. In one direction, nearby is the dome of St. Peters, and off in the other direction, the historic buildings of ancient Rome such as the Pantheon etc. Tonight's event is our first dinner - a two hour extravaganza of great Italian food. Tomorrow we take the big picture tour of Rome.
